A Journey of a Thousand Miles

A Journey of a Thousand Miles

     We've all heard the popular quotation attributed to a Chinese philosopher "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." However, as I was looking up this quote online I discovered that the philosopher credited with making this statement -- Lao-tzu -- actually said, "The journey of a thousand miles begins beneath one's feet." That made me stop and think about what God says in the midst of flurry and stress. In Psalm 46:11 God says, "Be still and know that I am God; [...]." In the last few months I have been busting around getting things ready, arranging preparations for my upcoming trip, scurrying around at work, laboring over language homework, studying for the Bible study I'm guiding this fall and about a week ago I realized that it had been a long time since I was still with God. I was creating such a whirlwind around myself that I was failing to spend time with the Master of "my" mission.  I was so focused on making my first "step" that I failed to realized that God has laid the path before my feet but that I must take His hand and be still in His presence to make any progress on this journey of a thousand miles. It was very humbling and since then I have sought to be still in God's presence at least once daily as I meditate on His word or talk with him during my day and as a result the peace of God that passes all understanding has guarded my heart and mind to have steady emotions and clear thoughts in the midst of the crazy of everyday life. I encourage you to stop and be still in God's presence today because He's laid the path before your feet but now He wants you to take His hand and rely on Him for the journey.

Psalm 46

God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
    and the mountains quake with their surging.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall;
    God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
    he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Come and see what the Lord has done,
    the desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease
    to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
    he burns the shields with fire.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth.”
11 The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.
